 South America & Central America

South America is a destination of opposites – offering the North American a summer vacation in the winter, and one of the hottest new cruise destinations in the World. With a long colonial history, combined with the modern glitter of nightlife in Rio or Buenos Aires, or tuxedoed penguins of Patagonia, South America is fast becoming a destination of choice for the more adventurous traveler.

There are two types of South America cruises primarily offered:

Amazon River and Orinoco River Cruises, usually 14 days or more duration, with ships cruising from the U.S mainland through the Caribbean, Devils Island, and into the Amazon River, the World’s greatest river. With a delta some 40 miles wide, and islands in the river as large as Switzerland, the Amazon is the marine highway for 5 countries in South America. Cruises sail as far as Manaus, deep in the heart of the rainforest, and sometimes cruise the Orinoco River to visit Angel Falls. You can generally begin or end your cruise in Manaus, with some cruise lines now offering roundtrip cruises from North America. Most Amazon River cruises sail seasonally between November and March.

South America Exploration Cruises, usually sail between the West coast and East coast of this huge continent. From Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires, cruises sail to Montevideo, the Falkland Islands, around Cape Horn and the Strait of Magellan, visiting the southernmost city in the World, Ushuaia, and up the west coast visiting Puerto Montt and Patagonia, to Santiago Chile or Lima Peru. These cruises are often 14-20 days or longer, sailing between November and March.

Cruise lines are also now combining Panama Canal cruises sailing from Florida, down the West coast of South America to Santiago, with optional trips available to the Galapagos Islands or Machu Picchu, from Callao, the port city for Lima, Peru. One large cruise line now also offers specific 10 day cruises to the Galapagos Islands, a world heritage site and nature paradise, roundtrip from Quito, capital of Ecuador. A number of cruise lines also offer cruises between Buenos Aires and Santiago via Antarctica.
